Like a prehistoric behemoth slowly emerging from a tranquil lake, the music of Spokane’s Water Monster doesn’t reveal itself to you all at once. Songwriter and vocalist Max Harnishfeger typically starts with a sparse chillwave foundation, and then he’ll gradually stack layers on top of it a funky bass line here, some handclaps there — before building to an undeniably catchy sing-along chorus. The songs shimmer there for awhile before dipping back below the surface.
