The riff is alive and well in the hands of local death metal act Askevault. Visualize piles of bones and impending doom (the art for their song “Trench Teeth” features a World War I-era image of a man poised to bayonet another); the band’s screaming, sludgy sounds are the aural equivalent. Self-described as “idiot crust,” Askevault rose from the ashes of Bay Area rockers Femacoffin, and they’re driven, according to their Bandcamp page, by a disgust of “where things are going these days.”
